UMOJA MARKET, SDG 8 DECENT WORK AND ECONOMIC GROWTH, SDG 5: GENDER EQUALITY BY KIROMBO DENISE.

Umoja market is a market located in Umoja,Eastlands it is filled with small partitioned stalls owned by women who are saloonists and tailors. These women have come together and majored in these businesses which these are their main source of income.
Some of the projects that they do is training where they train the other women who want to start the business where they nurture them into professional saloonists and tailors. This majors on the SDG 8: Decent work and economic growth, because this is a business involving women and considering SDG 5: Gender Equality which in this involves supporting women especially those doing their own business for sustainability.

Challenges.
Finance is the major problem facing the women as what they receive from their customers is little to catter for both their families and their businesses at the same time,as they were pleading for loans which they can use to develop their businesses.

The other challenge is insufficient power or electricity which this has affected them negatively considering their levels of income which are low comparing to the high levels of electricity bills.

Poor drainage systems in the market is also a major challenge facing the women. Focusing on the incoming El Nino rains (SDG:13 CLIMATE CHANGE) which will lead to flooding in the market area thus leading to the leaking of sewerlines which this is likely to lead to the break of waterbone diseases thus affecting the children who accompany their mothers to the market.
